cell phone, disconnect the wi-fi, and lose one’s self. It’s your time to go feed the chickens, pull some lettuce, beets, and Hawaiian sweet corn from the garden for dinner.

Step towards the edge of the cliff bordering this property, take a deep breath of that clean and refreshing Haiku air and look east over the hundreds of acres of the Ko’olau Forest Reserve all the way to the top of Haleakala; and to the north at Uaoa Bay. You don’t see anything but clouds, trees, blue sky and the horizon melting the sky in to the Pacific.

Waonahele Feature

The Haiku lifestyle is what this property is all about. Close enough, yet far away accurately describes the location – a strong element of privacy has much to do with this sensation. You are 10 minutes from saddling up your windsurf or kite gear at Hookipa Beach Park, or 20 minutes from the middle of the jungle at Kaumahina Park, overlooking Honomanu Bay and the huge winter swells. If you want to be really brave, drop in your jet ski and tow-board at Maliko Bay and take on the giants at Peahi Bay, known as “Jaws”.

Dinner at Colleens at the Cannery is always a good bet and is only a 6 mile drive or a 20 minute cycle as is the Haiku Grocery store, the Haiku post office, and other attractions in Haiku town.

Multiple Living Arrangements

The flexible floor plan of the main home accommodates either two separate living arrangements, or easily serves as one large home. On each level of the bi-level home there is a driveway and ample room for parking.

Living Feature

The upper level also has a great room and a large covered lanai perched about 100 feet from the edge of the valley. There are 2 bedrooms on this level. There is a large carport and laundry area that serves the upper level. The two levels are interconnected by means of a hall and stairway. Quality and craftsmanship are consistent throughout the home with tile and hardwood flooring, granite, travertine, and stainless steel.

Apart from the main house is a detached cottage with 2 bedrooms, one and a half baths, and a covered outdoor gazebo that is perfect for dining/entertaining.

Flowers, Fruit, and Trees

The current owners of 35 Waonahele purchased the property in 2003 from a native Hawaiian woman who was well known for her lei making ability. At the time of purchase, the property was a dying farm as her husband had passed and she was well into her 80′s and could no longer care for the property. She did most of the plantings as traditional as she could, this includes:

Flowers: Gardenias (Tahitian and mystery), pua kenikeni, hibiscus (red, pink, yellow, white), Ginger (red, yellow, pink, white, and shell gingers), variety of bromiliads, snowbush, antherium, lilikoi, and a large variety of orchids and ferns.

Trees: 13 mature coconut trees, orange, lemon, lime, tangerine, grapefruit, starfruit, surinam cherry, starfruit, guava, mountain apple, tapioca, banana, shower tree, “lipstick” tree (used in local and filipino cooking), a few ornamental palms, royal poinciana, and lots of ohia lehua trees which are known for their beautiful red flowers.

Ornamental plants: Black Lako Bamboo, purple stripe bamboo, elephant ears, mondo grass, tons of red and green ti along with many native and hard to find ti, and a large hedge the sellers call the snowball bush with white flowers.

Privacy, Beauty, and Sustainable Living

If you are looking for privacy, sustainability, and a beautiful location that can’t be duplicated on Maui, you won’t find a finer property than this. There is ample area to set up a solar PV system on the roofs, plenty of rainfall to keep your crops and landscaping lush, and the newly constructed greenhouse with its own commercial electric meter is perfect for storing your tools and maybe picking up a new hobby like orchid farming.
